By the end of kindergarten a child is expected to know the sound each of the 26 letters makes, plus the letter pairs "ch", "ck", "sh", "th" and "wh", and to blend sounds into short words like "sat" and "stop" — and pull them apart again to spell. Ontario's curriculum lists this as what a child needs before Grade 1 rather than as a kindergarten syllabus, so this is what a typical second kindergarten year covers.
