The same long vowel sound is spelt many ways — "train", "made", "great", "gate" and "way" all say "ai". Your child learns when to add "-ed" and "-ing" — just add it, drop a letter first, or something irregular like "go" becoming "went". Compound words get split into parts to spell them, and prefixes "un-"/"dis-" start appearing for "not" or "opposite of". This is standard Year 2 spelling teaching in England.
