Year 4 spelling games
Ages 8–9
Teaches 6 prefixes, the "shun"-sound family, and homophones like "here"/"hear".
Opens Fredle.
Prefixes "in-", "il-", "im-", "ir-", "anti-" and "inter-" are introduced, alongside the big "shun"-sound family — "session", "passion", "physician". Trickier endings like "-ture" (as in "adventure") and possessive apostrophes with plurals also feature this year, along with more homophones to tell apart. This is standard Year 4 spelling teaching in England.
Checked against the National Curriculum in England, published by the Department for Education.
Games that match Year 4
- Fredle — phonics word puzzle.
- Spell Duel — spell it before it lands.
Opening a game from this page sets the school year to Year 4, and every game then keeps the words at that level — so a Year 4 child gets Year 4 words, not a guess. The school year is a tap away inside the game, so a child moving up a year, or a younger sibling taking a turn, changes it in seconds.
